Style icons: Audrey Hepburn Inspired Style

Okay, let’s talk style.

Audrey Hepburn in Funny Face

My ultimate style icon is none other than the one and only Audrey Hepburn. From the classic black outfit consisting of cigarette trousers, a black polo neck jumper and loafers in Funny Face, to that gorgeous Givenchy gown in Sabrina, Audrey’s style was so chic and effortless. Her gowns on the red carpet were second to none, encapsulating that old Hollywood glamour.

Her casual style was naturally chic and classic – and don’t get me started on her baby fringe!

How to get Audrey Hepburn’s style

A lot of Audrey’s style is easy to emulate even in today’s world. Her clothes typically consisted of more muted tones: black, beige and white – however, you can recreate Audrey’s style with a splash of colour as well. The idea is to keep the silhouette simple, with clean lines. This will make it very easy to mix and match.

Audrey Hepburn’s style is accessible to any woman of any shape or size. Being a plus-size woman, I find it very easy to emulate her look. For example, I would pair black cigarette trousers with a classic striped Breton top, loafers or brogues, trench or any straight lined coat, a simple hairstyle, a dash of red lipstick (which has now become my signature lip colour) and voilá! You’re ready to go.

This is just one look of hers that I like to recreate. For the 50’s style dresses she also wore (which I have a LOT of!), my favourite places to shop for these are Hell Bunny, Banned Retro, Collectif and Lindy Bop (unfortunately this company has now closed down, but you can still find a lot of their clothes online). The wonderful thing about these companies is that they offer both regular and plus-size vintage style clothing.

However, I’m still at a loss of where to find that lovely mushroom-coloured jumper she wore in Breakfast at Tiffany’s!
